SYSO/IOP Alumna to appear with the National Youth Orchestra of the United States on NPR’s hit show “From The Top” with host Christopher O’Riley week of October 30th, 2017.
18-year-old violist Kayla Cabrera from Crete, Illinois will be featured in an upcoming broadcast of NPR’s From the Top with Host Christopher O’Riley, the preeminent showcase for young musicians heard weekly on stations nationwide. Kayla performs Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet with 18-year-old violinist Andrew Y. Kim from Old Tappan, New Jersey; 18-year-old violinist Evan Johanson from Seattle, Washington; and 17-year-old cellist Isabel Won from Belle Mead, New Jersey. Kayla is a freshman at The Juilliard School and studied viola with Roland Vamos in Chicago. She toured with NYO-USA in 2016 and 2017. Kayla got her start on the viola in SYSO’s Incredible Opportunity Program, and was SYSO’s principal violist until she joined the Chicago Youth Symphony, and became its principal violist.
The episode was recorded for a live audience at The Performing Arts Center at Purchase College in July 2017 with Christopher O’Riley and the National Youth Orchestra of the United States (NYO-USA), directed by Marin Alsop. This special episode of From the Top can be heard by podcast and on stations nationwide during the week of October 30.
